PropertyGuru Shaves Heads for Children's Cancer Foundation
SINGAPORE, 7th July 2015 – PropertyGuru Group (“PropertyGuru” or the “Group”) raised over S$39,000 in donations for the Children’s Cancer Foundation through a series of fun-filled and meaningful “GuruCares” activities on 5th July 2015.
Contributing back to society and helping the less fortunate has always been one of PropertyGuru’s core values. Since the launch of PropertyGuru’s GuruCares Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program in 2010, the Company had been actively organising numerous activities to assist the less fortunate, especially under-privileged children and low income and homeless families. To date, more than $100,000 has been raised by over 300 PropertyGuru employees in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.
PropertyGuru has supported the Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF) as their key beneficiary every two years since 2011. As part of their fundraising efforts, PropertyGuru put a new spin to the CCF’s signature fundraising event - Hair for Hope – by having employees and their family members participate in auctions to shave the heads of supervisors and senior management.
“It’s a small sacrifice to have no hair for a few months” said Steve Melhuish, Co-founder and Group CEO of PropertyGuru. Melhuish's wife bid S$1,800 for the privilege to shave his head.
“We’ve been shaving our heads every two years since 2011 to
support Children’s Cancer Foundation. As a father, it’s unimaginable for any
child to be diagnosed with cancer. Hence, I hope the very little that we do
will make a small but significant difference for them and their families. We
will continue to help less fortunate kids in the four countries that we operate
through our humble initiatives,” Melhuish added.
All in all, Hair for Hope 2015 saw 32 members of the PropertyGuru team, including the co-founders, leadership team and staff, shave their heads for a good cause.
The Singapore PropertyGuru team also organised and managed 12 stalls at the Family Bazaar held at Bishan Community Centre on 5th July 2015. From selling food and second-hand clothing to face-painting and mini-games, 45 Gurus came together to make this event a success, in the hope of raising awareness and much-needed donations for the CCF. Visitors and the team also bonded through the shared purpose of charity and family-friendly fun.
One of the highlights of the day was a Zumba class that attracted over 50 participants. Representatives from the CCF were also present to provide first-hand information for those interested to find out more about the organization, and to facilitate the registration for Hair for Hope. An informative talk and video presentation also conveyed to the public what children with cancer and their families have to go through.
A total of $39,000 was raised through all these events, but most importantly, the staff at PropertyGuru gained renewed perspective and empathy for this cause, and a sense of satisfaction at giving back to society.
