Getting around Punggol is going to be interesting. Planned as a car-lite town with an extensive cycling network and excellent public transport facilities, it’s setting the standard for emulation.
Two new MRT connections are expected to be ready by 2030. The Cross Island Line is under development and the North-East Line will be extended to serve Punggol Downtown. The Western LRT Loop is also planned to start operations gradually in tandem with future developments.
More new roads and improvements to existing roads are being planned to ensure that Punggol residents can enjoy easy connectivity to the rest of Singapore. Punggol Way and Punggol Road will be improved to provide better connections to Tampines Expressway (TPE), while a new road will be built to link Punggol Central to the TPE and Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE).
Getting around Punggol: transportation options
Residents of Punggol can use the extensive MRT and LRT network to travel to all parts of Singapore. Residents can take the North-East Line to Serangoon MRT station before hopping onto the Circle Line, which will take them all the way to Marina Bay. Students of the National University of Singapore (NUS) can also take the Circle Line in the opposite direction towards Kent Ridge MRT station.
Alternatively, commuters from Punggol can ride the North-East Line all way to Dhoby Ghaut MRT station before transferring to the North-South Line to get to Raffles Place.
Residents who do not live near Punggol MRT station can also use the well-developed LRT network to link up with the MRT network.
The Cross Island Line, which is currently under planning, will start running from Changi and end at Jurong. It will also pass through Loyang, Pasir Ris, Punggol, Ang Mo Kio, Bukit Timah, Clementi and West Coast. When completed in 2030, it will greatly shorten the commute time of Punggol residents.

In addition, Punggol is well served by the Punggol bus interchange that is conveniently located next to Punggol MRT station and Waterway Point. A total of 17 bus routes and three feeder bus services originate from the bus interchange.

Punggol bus interchanges and routes
Motorists can use the TPE, which will connect them to the Central Expressway (CTE) and Seletar Expressway (SLE). The Punggol Semi Expressway, which is still under construction, will link motorists from Punggol directly to the KPE. Thus, motorists will avoid heavy traffic along Punggol Road during peak hours and reduce their time on the road by at least 10 minutes.

Residents of Punggol can travel easily to other parts of the island easily via the MRT and LRT network. In addition, the TPE allows them to link up easily with the existing expressway network.
The government’s plans to develop Punggol Digital District will turn the spotlight to the estate. To cope with the increase in traffic, the government is expected to improve the current transport infrastructure of Punggol which will greatly cut down travel time for the residents and improve the area’s accessibility.
