HK’s lucky flat is not so lucky

A Chinese buyer who paid HK$56 million ($7.2 million) for a “lucky” unit in Hong Kong may be regretting his move, according to a media report.

The Chinese buyer bought the luxury duplex apartment, located on the 68th floor in the Mid-Levels district, for HK$88,000 per square foot. Number 68, which means fortune and happiness; and 88, which means double fortune, are lucky numbers in Chinese.

However, it turns out that the said unit is actually located on the 44th floor of a 46-storey building, said the report. Number 44 sounds like a double death in China’s two languages, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Hong Kong Developer Henderson Land confirmed the location of the unit and admitted that it picked the floor numbers 88 and 68 to lure Chinese buyers, who are obsessed with lucky numbers.
