More UK home loans available to borrowers with small deposits

3 Dec 2010

The number of mortgages available to UK borrowers with small deposits rose 50 percent over the past year, according to a UK-based financial price comparison website Moneyfacts.co.uk.

However, interest rates on these mortgages are slightly high, according to The Telegraph.

Currently, more than 1,000 different home loans are available in the market for borrowers who have paid a down payment of 20 percent of the total home value, up from 523 recorded in December 2009.

The number of transactions available for borrowers with a 20 percent down payment has increased 151 percent over the past 12 months, while those borrowers with a 15 percent down payment have seen a large increase in the number of mortgages available to them. The number of mortgages being offered to those with a 10 percent down payment has also surged, from 116 to 204.

But the rise in mortgage availability has not been matched by a large decline in the interest rates being charged on some of the transactions, with lenders opting to charge more to people with smaller down payments.
