In line with plans of remaking Punggol, HDB has completed nearly 18,000 residential units as of June 1, with another 9,400 units being developed, said Ms. Grace Fu, senior minister of State for National Development.
HDB is working to complete 35,000 residential units before the end of 2015, making Punggol similar in size to the Toa Payoh housing estate.
Ms. Fu said that as the population of Punggol reaches critical growth, new facilities will come on board.
The very first mixed commercial-cum-residential development area in the Town Centre will soon be launched in the second-half of 2010, while a premium project by HDB will commence later this month. It features waterfront and eco-friendly living.
Ms. Fu stressed that it is also crucial for a newly-built town like Punggol to promote its identity by showcasing awareness of its rich tradition, which dates back to Singapore’s early days.
Grassroots leaders are working hand-in-hand with the government agencies to build educational panels along Punggol Waterway, highlighting several aspects of the town’s development, both past and present.
