Visitor arrivals in June set record

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said visitor arrivals in June increased 26.7 percent to 950,000 from 750,000 over the same period last year, setting a new June record and indicating a seventh consecutive month increase.

There was a total of 3.8 million visitor days in June, which refers to the amount of time travellers spent in Singapore. This was up 22.6 percent from the previous year.

Among the top five visitor-generating markets include Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Australia and China, accounting for 56 percent of all arrivals in June. Indonesia, in particular made up 214,000 arrivals, well above Malaysia, with 93,000 arrivals.

China, Malaysia and Hong Kong were the strongest in terms of growth. The number of Chinese tourists coming to the country jumped 65.8 percent.

Meanwhile, gazetted room revenue grew 45.7 percent year-on-year to $170 million in June. The average occupancy rate (AOR) in the country stood at 88 percent, an increase of 12.3 percent, while average room rate (ARR) increased 22.7 percent at $219.
 
Revenue per available room (RevPar) also increased 42.6 percent at $192.

Across different hotel types, the largest growth was recorded by the AOR in the economy category, 19 percentage points higher to reach 88 percent.

ARR had the strongest growth in the mid-tier hotel category, up 33.4 percent at $182.

Mid-tier hotels also saw the largest increase in RevPar, up 50.6 percent in June 2010 at $162.
