Students paid to queue outside Bedok project

24 Nov 2011

Some 500 people had formed a long queue outside Bedok Residences since Sunday.

Most of the people in the queue were students who were paid by property agents representing potential buyers keen on the project, said ERA, the appointed marketing agent for Bedok Residences.

It added that only those above 16 years of age had been queuing overnight for the project.

“An agent is paying us S$10 an hour but we don’t know the buyer or if there actually is one. We were recommended by a friend,” said Ong Wee Kiat, 17, a secondary school student who had been there with his friend Tan Yong Zhao since 7am this morning. Despite the long wait in the sweltering weather, he said the experience was “manageable”.

Meanwhile, Mrs Subramaniam, 52, a retiree, had also been queuing since 7am with her husband.

“I didn’t know we would have to queue or take a number (for a unit). I thought we would already be able to go in (when we arrived),” she said.

Asked why she and her husband had chosen this particular development, she replied, “We’re very familiar with the area. I’ve never lived in Bedok — I live in the West. But my former workplace is nearby and I’ve been visiting this area for 20 to 30 years, so we decided to buy a unit at this condo.”

Located in Bedok Town Centre, Bedok Residences is part of a 15-storey mixed-use development comprising a shopping mall, residential units and a transportation hub linked to Bedok MRT station.

It offers a combination of one-, one-plus-study, two-, three- and four-room apartments, as well as penthouses.

Launched today, prices of the units could start from S$1,250 psf for smaller units and S$1,150 psf for the larger apartments.
