Republic of Singapore Yacht Club (RSYC), Asia’s oldest yacht club, has broken new ground with the development of a five-storey vertical dry stack, a central part of RSYC’s ongoing S$9 million expansion project.
After operating from its modern yacht club building for 11 years, RSYC unveiled in February 2011 its plans to upgrade its facilities and services to meet the needs of its upcoming members.
The new dry stack, the largest of its kind in Singapore, will triple the dry berth facilities of the club to approximately 300 boats, from the existing 110 boats. This will be added to RSYC’s 127 current wet berths at West Coast Ferry Road.
Set to be completed by the end of this year, the five-storey vertical dry stack will hold 300 boats, each up to 35 ft in length. It is anticipated that there will be an increased demand for dry berths in Singapore, as boat owners appreciate the advantages of keeping smaller boats of below 35 ft out of the water when not in use.
Aside from upgrading its berthing facilities, the club also plans to double its accommodation rooms, from 32 suites and rooms to around 60 rooms, in a new four-storey adjacent wing.
Established in 1826, RSYC transferred to its current location in August 1999, its third home since 1920. The club’s dry berths have been operating at full capacity in recent years. In June 2010, the membership gave its Main Committee the authorisation to expand, a plan conceived by the RSYC Committee two years ago.
The expansion project started in the first quarter of this year and is expected to be completed within six months, while work on the new wing is scheduled for completion by mid 2012.
