RP wants lower age limit for singles to acquire flats

3 May 2011

The Reform Party (RP) wants to lower the age limit for single Singaporeans eligible to acquire a HDB flat, said Ho Soak Harn, a member of the RP’s West Coast Group Representation Constituency (GRC) team, at the West Coast Park rally last night.

She said that this can be achieved by offering one- or two-bedroom “starter flats”, and single buyers can “pay off in 15 years, not 25 years”.

Kenneth Jeyaretnam, Party Chief of the RP’s West Coast GRC team, also mentioned several policy pledges from RP’s manifesto, like a minimum wage, reform of the CPF scheme to allow withdrawals at age 55, universal health insurance to replace Medisave and Medishield and reducing National Service first to 18 months, then by a year.

Mr. Jeyaretnam also admitted that he misquoted a letter by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on the demise of his late father, JB Jeyaretnam (JBJ), as saying that JBJ “had to be destroyed”.

PM Lee’s letter had noted that JBJ and the PAP “never saw eye to eye on any major political issue and he sought by all means to demolish the PAP and our system of government”.

Mr. Jeyaretnam noted that he is “not standing here for some kind of vendetta but because like JBJ, I want to build Singapore, to strengthen our government.”
