Keppel Land making more green efforts

27 Jun 2011

Property firm Keppel Land has included its overseas developments in the company’s third year of bringing out sustainability efforts.

The company’s eight investment hotels and buildings in Myanmar, Vietnam and Indonesia have jointly consumed approximately 52 million kilowatt hour (kWh) of energy.

This is more than twice the consumption of the five Singapore-based buildings in K-REIT Asia’s and Keppel Land’s portfolio.

These buildings utilised 22.5 kWh in 2010 and reduced the comapny’s energy bills from last year’s 23.5 million kWh by four percent.

Serena Toh, Deputy General Manager for Investor Relations and Research at Keppel Land, said, “As asset size and profit contribution from overseas projects such as China, Vietnam and Indonesia are growing in significance, we have expanded the scope of the reporting to reflect this development as part of good governance and transparency for completeness.”

Keppel Land noted that energy service companies have been appointed to determine how their foreign-held buildings can enhance their environmental friendliness.

In Singapore, Keppel Land’s water consumption and carbon emissions have shown a steady decrease over the past three years.

Total greenhouse gas emitted in Singapore was 12,855 tonnes of carbon dioxide, a decrease of 2.4 percent from 13,170 tonnes in the previous year.

In addition, the company used 232,000 cubic metres of water in 2010, a decrease of two percent from 2009 levels.

Moreover, about S$5.2 million has been spent by Keppel Land on protecting the environment through outreach programmes, certification and installing green building features in projects which have been recognised with a Green Mark accreditation.
