MND invites public to solve HDB's challenges

7 Jun 2011

National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan has invited members of the public and market players to solve some of the problems faced by HDB dwellers.

In his latest blog post entitled “Solving Daily Problems,” Mr. Khaw cited some of the common inconveniences: “putting laundry out to dry can be dangerous, requiring strong arms” and “strong winds bring rain right into the flats from under the front doors.”

The minister has asked Mr. Lee Yi Shyan, the Minister of State, to lead the initiative.

Mr. Khaw wrote, “We will set aside a sum of money, to call for ideas from both the public and market players, fund the promising ideas, pilot them in some flats, get them assessed by the users themselves (e.g. RCs can assemble residents and maids to test out the ideas and evaluate them), and if found practical, replicate them in other estates.”

While the HDB has a research unit — the Building Research Institute — which is responsible for creating innovative solutions for problems arising in the HDB, the minister wanted to “tap on the expertise and creativity of the public out there.”

He also added that anyone who has ideas can contact Mr. Lee via http://www.facebook.com/leeyishyan.
