S'pore again named best convention city in Asia

2 Aug 2011

Singapore has retained its position as Asia’s Top Convention City,
according to the International Congress and Convention Association’s
(ICCA) latest global rankings.

Furthermore, the country has
retained its position as one of the world’s Top Five Convention Cities,
along with Barcelona, Berlin, Paris and Vienna.

Martin Sirk,
Chief Executive of ICCA, has applauded the island-nation on hosting most
of the rotating association meetings throughout the Asia Pacific region
in 2010.

“Singapore has been proactively targeting this sector
as part of a clear strategy for many years, and was probably the first
destination in the world to so closely align this meetings strategy with
the economic development goals of the country,” Sirk said.

Last
year, Singapore hosted a total of 136 rotating events, up 14 percent
over the events that qualified in 2009. Noteworthy events that
contributed to the growth include the World Conference on Continuing
Engineering Education 2010 and the 20th Annual Conference of the
Inter-Pacific Bar Association.

According to the Singapore Tourism
Board (STB), the country drew 3.1 million business travellers in 2010,
accounting for 27 percent of Singapore’s total visitors and amassing
S$5.4 billion in revenue.
