The Ministry of National Development (MND) yesterday revealed its detailed plans for the redevelopment of Geylang Serai.
Under the Master Plan 2008, Paya Lebar Central, where Geylang Serai is located, will be developed into a dynamic regional hub with a unique cultural identity. It will be a pedestrian-friendly commercial centre with retail, office, hotel and public amenities.
MND noted that a 10,000 sq m civic centre will be developed to accommodate a Community Club, a Malay Heritage Gallery, Community Development Council offices and other community-related facilities.
It will be built by the People’s Association (PA) along with the National Heritage Board (NHB) and National Arts Council (NAC). The centre is set for completion by 2015 to 2016.
Beside the civic centre, a 2,000 sq m public plaza will be developed to provide a venue for cultural and community events.
In addition, some existing developments will have to be phased out to accommodate the redevelopment.
According to the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), Geylang Serai, a private commercial property developed in 1989 with a lease to expire at the end of 2011, will host commercial developments.
“I am excited to be part of this project, together with the other work group members, as it gives us an opportunity to put in place a distinctive icon for Geylang Serai,” said Dr Maliki Osman, Mayor (South East District) & Senior Parliamentary Secretary (Defence & National Development), who will chair the workgroup that will guide the implementation of the Geylang Serai Precinct.
“I am encouraged by the many feedback and suggestions that I have received from members of public in just the last few days. Certainly, we will continue to solicit ideas from the various communities to co-create Geylang Serai that it will continue to be a vibrant cultural hub in Singapore.”
“We have also launched a dedicated Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/WismaGeylangSerai) for members of the public to share with us their ideas,” he said.
