Singapore presidential candidate Dr Tony Tan has urged the Housing and Development Board (HDB) to investigate the dispute over the transfer of public sites in Aljunied GRC, which is held by the Workers’ Party (WP).
The opposition party’s complaint claimed that HDB transferred 26 public sites to the People’s Association (PA) without notifying the WP-held town council.
The former deputy prime minister expressed his concern over any possible unfairness, unintentional or otherwise.
“For this particular case, my view is that the HDB should investigate the incident thoroughly. Get the facts and make sure that the proper procedures are followed,” said Dr Tan.
“It is important that justice and fairness should be done, and not only that, but the public should see that justice and fairness have been done.”
On 2 August, WP Chairman Sylvia Lim claimed that the transfers, predominantly fields and hard courts utilised for community events, were “politically motivated and an abuse of power”, as they occurred right after the General Election.
She added that the move aims “to enable PAP candidates who lost at the last elections to re-emerge at community events”.
