The Hong Kong mansion (pictured) of the late martial arts expert and actor Bruce Lee will be put up for sale following a failed attempt to redevelop the property into a museum, according to AsiaOne.
The 5,000 sq ft property has a price tag of HK$180 million (S$28.4 million), said Yu Panglin, the property’s 90-year old billionaire owner.
“I’m no longer considering (the museum plan) since the government is not supportive,” he said.
Located in the posh residential district of Kowloon Tong, the two-storey mansion became a short-stay hotel with rooms rented out at US$25 (S$30.5) an hour, usually to couples.
“I’m running out of patience, I don’t want to wait anymore,” said Yu, adding that the mansion is in urgent need of renovation. Moreover, the hotel owner failed to pay rent for two years due to poor business.
Yu stated that the government refused his proposal to expand the residence by adding three floors to include a martial arts training centre, a cinema and library, which were his conditions to donate the mansion.
Lee’s fans have long demanded a large hometown shrine for the Chinese-American movie star who made martial arts popular with classic Kung Fu films like ‘Fists of Fury’ (1971) and ‘Enter the Dragon’ (1973). He died in 1973 at age 32 after a severe reaction to medication.
