The government has allotted four new sites for international schools wanting to expand their campuses in Singapore, according to a report by The Straits Times.
The land parcels, which are estimated to range in size from 1.7 ha to five ha, were released under a Request for Interest (RFI) exercise, administered by an inter-agency committee led by the EDB (Economic Development Board).
Three of the sites will have a 30-year lease period and will be located in Pasir Ris, Punggol and Depot Road, while the remaining is an interim site in Bedok, available until end-2015.
“As international businesses grow their activities in and from Singapore, we continue to see demand for places in international schools,” said Alvin Tan, Assistant Managing Director at EDB.
The need for more sites became apparent four years ago, when several international schools were full or had waiting lists. In response, the government released more land for international schools through 2008 and 2010’s RFI exercises.
Thus, the third RFI exercise aims to address the persisting space scarcity faced by some international schools.
Proposals will be accepted until 2 July and will be evaluated based on criteria set by the EDB, which include the quality of the proposal, the school’s finances, ability to meet market demand and track record.
A total of 17 international school campuses are currently occupying state property.
