A record 24 developers received Green and Gracious Builder Awards this year, reflecting a growing consciousness across the industry to integrate eco-friendly features in property developments.
Along this line, Lee Yi Shyan, Minister of State for Trade and Industry and National Development, noted that the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) may require all major contractors under its Contractors Registry System to achieve the Green and Gracious Builder certification in two years’ time.
Around 130 contractors will likely be involved, but so far only 37 have received certification. The BCA will consult stakeholders such as the SCAL (Singapore Contractors Association) on the implementation.
Moreover, the BCA hopes to launch a new voluntary accreditation scheme by year-end to further encourage the adoption of universal design for new and existing developments.
205 Green Mark awards were given out this year, a rise from last year’s 164 awards. This is in recognition of the growing number of developers and building owners who see the growing importance of green and sustainable developments not just for their business but also for the environment.
City Developments Ltd (CDL) was the most awarded developer this year with 25 awards including 13 Green Mark awards, bringing its total number of Green Mark awards to 66, of which 23 are Platinum awards – the top accolade.
Meanwhile, the National University of Singapore (NUS), Ascendas and CapitaLand received the Green Mark Champion Awards. NUS is the first educational institute to be honoured and was recognised for its green features and best practices such as optimising architectural designs to minimise solar heat gains and maximise day lighting; integrative design and efficient use of space; and natural ventilation for open communal spaces and circulation areas.
