Green buildings will account for 30 percent of China’s new construction projects by 2020, according to an official statement.
Jointly released by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and the Ministry of Finance, this marks the first time that the country will set a target for the development of energy-efficient buildings.
The statement indicated that the central government will speed up the development of the construction sector by improving industry standards, increasing policy incentives, developing related industries and promoting technological progress. It also specified a goal of bringing the country’s building energy consumption ratio closer to that of other developed nations by 2020.
For buildings to be deemed energy-efficient, they must save land, water, materials and energy as much as possible throughout their life cycle to help protect the environment and reduce pollution.
Many analysts said China’s move shows that the ‘green construction’ sector will be an economic breakthrough in terms of driving growth and will play a vital role in the country’s energy-saving efforts.
