By Romesh Navaratnarajah:

The Ministry of Community, Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) will spend about S$100 million to build up to 40 Integrated Day Facilities (IDF) in Singapore by 2016.

First on the list is a three-in-one day care centre for the elderly in Serangoon (pictured) that will be ready by the second half of next year.

Located on the former site of the old Serangoon Bus Interchange, the IDF is expected to house the largest child care centre that can accommodate up to 220 children, including infants.

According to MCYS, the new IDFs will provide care for those in wheelchairs and suffering from dementia.

The facilities will also provide the elderly with centre-based nursing as well as community rehabilitation which will be available on a sessional basis, even to those who are not day care clients.

Additionally, the larger IDFs will be equipped with a gym and social space for residents.

“We need to support our seniors to age-in-place. With the new IDF located at a convenient location, many families will benefit greatly,” said Madam Halimah Yacob, Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports.
