Several ageing HDB blocks in Hougang are set to get a much needed upgrade, along with several precincts eligible for improvement works under two national upgrading programmes.
Six blocks in Hougang Avenue 3 – 1, 2, 6, 7, 24, 25 — will be enhanced under the Home Improvement Programme (HIP), which will target problems such as ceiling leakages, said PAP Grassroots Adviser Desmond Choo.
Meanwhile, blocks at Hougang Avenue 5 – 320 to 328, 332 to 341 and 351 to 363 – will undergo the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP), which includes building amenities such as fitness corners and covered walkways.
The nominations for upgrading were put forth by the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council and Hougang MP Png Eng Huat and supported by Choo.
Had Choo not supported the schemes, the approval for upgrading works would not have taken place.
While residents will still have to decide on the NRP and HIP, Choo said he is confident that they will vote in favour of upgrading, given their enthusiasm about the Lift Upgrading Programme.
Upgrading in Hougang has been a controversial issue the last few years as it is an opposition-held (Worker’s Party) ward that was previously passed over for improvement and renewal programmes.
