Will singles be allowed to buy new flats?

The government is studying whether singles should be allowed to purchase new flats directly from the Housing and Development Board (HDB), said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Currently, singles and those aged 35 and above can only purchase resale flats but cannot buy new flats directly from the HDB.

“It is something on the minds of many Singaporeans, because the singles numbers have gone up,” said Mr Lee in his National Day Speech on Sunday.

“I fully understand these concerns. I should say MND (Ministry of National Development) also fully understands the concerns. And I should also say (National Development Minister) Khaw Boon Wan is looking actively at the matter.”

The government is addressing current housing issues by launching new HDB flats and is also looking at cutting the waiting time spent on booking units.

“I am confident nearly every Singaporean household can afford their own home. We have done it before and we can do it again,” said Mr Lee, adding that the rising population could be accommodated by developing more housing estates and increasing land reclamation.
