To preserve the unique characteristics of Jalan Kayu, Holland Village and Serangoon Garden, the government has designated these areas as ‘identity nodes’ under the URA Draft Master Plan 2013.
This boosts the total number of identity nodes in the country to 18 and includes Balestier, Tanjong Katong, Jalan Besar, Joo Chiat/East Coast Road, Anak Bukit, Jalan Leban, Thomson Village, Springfield, Coronation area, Morse Road, Gillman Village, Punggol Point/Coney Island, Changi Village, Pasir Ris and Pulau Ubin.
The three communities were added to the list due to their unique historical charm. As such, more than 70 buildings will be conserved including Alexandra Hospital, former military buildings in Seletar and the Commonwealth Avenue wet market, noted Mohamed Ismail, CEO of PropNex Realty.
“The continuous effort to preserve such sites of historical heritage and charisma is a positive move. Jalan Kayu, being the smallest of the newly identified areas will add greater value to the landed properties and residential homes located there,” he said.
Desmond Sim, Associate Director at CBRE Research, noted: “It is gratifying that the plan is not just about intensifying and maximising economic value of land. Rather, it is geared towards the development of communities and at the same time concerned about preserving heritage and unique attributes of certain estates.”
