Residents of the Seletar Hills estate are seeing red over on-going construction and road works (pictured) taking place in their backyard.
The residential estate located off Yio Chu Kang Road is home to mainly low-rise landed properties. With new condominium developments like The Greenwich and Seletar Park Residences springing up in the area and major road and drainage projects taking place simultaneously, many residents are protesting about the inconveniences.
Stella Seah, a 25-year old student living in the neighbourhood told PropertyGuru: “Nowadays the area is messy because of the road works and construction, but I am more concerned about the confusion caused by the bus stop locations being changed. Unless you jaywalk, you have to walk a long way to get to a bus stop.”
Another resident, 26-year old teacher Irfan Sallihin said: “The road works are causing congestion and that’s why I sometimes have to use an alternative route which takes longer than usual.”
But some homeowners are looking on the bright side. “I think it’s good that they are starting to build connections from this area to the major expressways,” said one woman in her 40s who declined to be named.
According to information on the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) website, part of the road works includes a new dual three-lane Sengkang West Road that will connect Yio Chu Kang Road with the Tampines Expressway and the widening of a section of Jalan Kayu to a dual two-lane road. The projects are expected to be completed in Q4 2014.
At the same time, the Public Utilities Board (PUB) is carrying out drainage improvement works in the estate.
Commenting on the issue, Percy Jayapal, Chairman of the Seletar Hills Estate Residents Association (SHERA) told PropertyGuru: “Some of the residents raised concerns on the difficulties faced by them as the works entailed closing some parts of the roads and also drain water stagnation. SHERA had organized a meeting with PUB and the contractor HEXA, (and they) assured the residents that they are working to minimize the inconvenience."
