In a bid to keep HDB flats within the reach of Singaporeans, National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan has cited some "reasonable suggestions" for the public housing market, reported The Straits Times.
Speaking at a community event in Woodlands yesterday, Mr Khaw said he will be looking at several proposals including extending the Minimum Occupation Period (MOP), shortening leases or going back to allowing buyers to sell their flats only to the housing board.
However, he said the government would need to consider the impact of “trade-offs” between homeowners and buyers who may have differing views, asking: "How do we make sensible trade-offs which are sustainable?"
“Most people actually do not have a housing problem. But a minority do, and they are serious housing problems…so we need to tackle them, but in a way that is not at the expense of homeowners,” he said.
Last friday, Mr Khaw announced several new housing measures to help first-timers, second-timers, singles, divorcees and the elderly.
