Dubai to get a rainforest-skyscraper

The model of a skyscraper covered with plants and trees will be showcased at the Outdoor Design Build & Supply Show in Dubai later this month.

The new tower is part of the growing popularity of eco-friendly projects in the United Arab Emirates.

Designed by French architect Eduard Francois, it will be unveiled by Teracrea, an Italian firm which specialises in using greenery to play a leading role in architecture and interior design.

Francois had previously worked on the 10-storey Flower Tower apartment (pictured) in Paris, which comprises of bamboo plants placed in 380 permanent pots, “creating a green curtain around the building” and giving residents the impression that “they are sleeping in a tree”. The building is also fitted with an outdoor glass elevator that allows light to enter common areas.

Meanwhile, Dubai’s government plans to cover a quarter of the emirate, or about 38,000 hectares, with green space by 2025. Back in 2010, authorities said they hoped to increase the amount of green space per person from 13 sq m to 25 sq m.

At the same time, countries in the region are considering passing laws that will require property developers to provide green space to at least 25 percent of a site.
