The People’s Association (PA) has unveiled a new booklet that highlights the problems faced by residents of private housing estates.
The guide took two years to publish and is titled “My Neighbours, My Friends – Gracious Living in the Private Estates”, and is aimed at helping residents make their neighbourhoods “gracious and harmonious”. It provides light-hearted insights on issues in private estates such as pest control, cleanliness, noise management and usage of shared spaces like carparks.
Singapore has nearly 200,000 private homes, including condominiums and landed properties.
“They (private estate residents) already have a fair ‘ok’ level of harmony. We hope it can be enhanced so that the quality of life among neighbours can be even better,” said co-author Selan Sayampanathan.
“The key to all this is really how to live a life bearing in mind that life is more than about ourselves; always, life is about others, your neighbours, your family members and those less lucky than you are and how you can help bring some joy to them and along the way you benefit too,” noted National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan, who launched the booklet.
Mr Khaw also highlighted the importance of Neighbourhood Committees (NCs) in private estates and Residents’ Committees (RCs) within HDB estates.
In total, 5,000 copies of the booklet will be distributed to NC chairpersons. It will also be translated from English into three other languages, and some cases mentioned inside will be acted out in video clips soon to be made available online.
