A 45-room mansion in Mayfair, London is set to go on sale for £250 million (S$317.8 million), making it one of the most expensive private homes being sold in the UK.
Built between 1756 to 1761, Cambridge House (pictured) was once the home of the Duke of Cambridge and Victorian Prime Minister Lord Palmerston. From 1865 to 1999, ownership of the property came under the Naval and Military Club. In 2011, it was sold to the billionaire Reuben Brothers and was recently used as an extensive club.
Under approved renovation plans to be completed in 2016, the property will be converted into a family home with an area the size of a football pitch. It will have an underground swimming pool and large wine cellar.
Peter Wetherell of Wetherell Estates believes Cambridge House is like “nothing that has ever been launched into the Mayfair market. It overlooks Green Park and Buckingham Palace. There is nothing on the market like it”.
The sale will help elevate Mayfair as the ultimate residential enclave for the super-rich. Other houses in the area have been converted into offices, embassies and clubs while several are being transformed into trophy houses.
The mansion’s selling price will likely be over £250 million. However, two properties in London – Rutland Gate in Hyde Park and 18 Carlton House Terrace near Buckingham Palace – are reportedly being sold for £300 million (S$381.3 million) and £250 million respectively.
