After clinching a development site in Melbourne’s Southbank district for AU$42.3 million (S$47.93 million), Singapore developer, Aspial Corporation, plans to build the tallest tower in the city.
"We are truly humbled, yet excited to be involved in this monumental project. It is certainly a groundbreaking milestone for Aspial to play a part in the development of the tallest skyscraper in Melbourne, which will soon lend its compelling presence to the city’s urban skyline," said company CEO Koh Wee Seng.
Notably, the development site has two active planning permits, one of which allows for the construction of a 388-metre tower but is subject to approval from aviation authorities.
The authorities have stated that this could violate the aviation guidelines of Essendon Airport. If such a conflict arises, Aspial is prepared to build a 312 metre tower instead. Even at this lower height, it will still be the tallest skyscraper in Melbourne. Currently, the record holder is Eureka Tower, standing at 297 metres.
Comprising posh apartments and boutique office space, the skyscraper will overlook the Yarra River. Its uppermost level will be opened to the public.
The Singapore-listed developer has plans to make the skyscraper an iconic landmark that will be globally recognized like the Marina Bay Sands SkyPark in Singapore, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office, as well as the Oriental Pearl Tower and Shanghai’s World Financial Centre in China.
