The National Heritage Board (NHB) is commissioning a project to document the history of ten towns by June 2015, according to media reports.
The towns are Chai Chee, Pasir Ris, Bishan (pictured), Bukit Panjang, Woodlands, Yishun, Geylang Serai, Kembangan, Joo Chiat and Kallang.
Due to increased interest from residents, NHB had initiated the project which will collect residents’ memories on what the neighbourhoods were like back then in the form of photos, oral histories and stories.
For example, there could be exhibition panels depicting early beginnings, developments, heritage sites and iconic buildings within each neighbourhood. The information will be also be made available on the NHB’s website to give the public easy access to historical data.
The towns’ boundaries will reportedly be established according to official records, maps, and the residents’ social memories, and not strictly by electoral constituency boundaries.
The project is part of Singapore’s golden jubilee celebrations next year.
