Feedback sought on short-term rentals

short-term rentals

With the growing popularity of short-term accommodation websites like Airbnb, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) will look to gather feedback from the public on whether subletting rules for private homes need to be amended, media reports said.

Airbnb rentals are generally less expensive than hotels and let homeowners rent out their apartments and rooms to guests for short stays.

Back in September, Senior Minister of State for National Development Lee Yi Shyan asked the government to study the implications of websites offering short-term accommodation.

URA has stated in the past that property owners should not sublet their premises to tourists for short stays, as this will lead to high turnover of occupants and high human traffic, which could cause nuisance and safety concerns to the neighbours.

The minimum period for subletting of private units is six months, and this also applies to HDB flats.
