More international property buyers are looking for country houses and castles in Scotland, according to Jamie Macnab, Head of the Country House team at Savills’ Edinburgh office.
Macnab said he has more than 500 people currently looking for baronial properties in Scotland, and that its appeal shows no signs of slowing even ahead of the referendum.
“The uplift in the U.K. economy has been well documented and housing markets are now recovering all across the country. Everyone is aware of the referendum, it causes uncertainty and that’s not good for any market, but it does seem as if the sentiment turned last year from being negative to positive,” he was quoted in a recent media report.
Scotland has always held appeal for international buyers including Scottish expats who have made their fortunes abroad returning home. Latest figures demonstrate such buyers see the value gap, and the quality of life compared to other prime locations, to be two compelling reasons to buy in Scotland.
Recent sales include the £2.5 million Myres Castle in Auchtermuchty, Fife (pictured) which boasts 10 bedrooms, helicopter pad and tennis court.
“Many tell us they have set their hearts on either a Scottish castle or a French chateau. Whereas France may have the edge with regard to weather, Scotland provides stiff competition when it comes to peace, tranquillity and history.”
