Century 21’s CEO Ku Swee Yong has applied to be a Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP), according to media reports.
Ku, who is also Director of International Property Advisor, said to the media he hopes to use his expertise in real estate to spur discussions on the role of public housing.
An NMP is a non-elected Member of Parliament (MP) appointed by the president who represents independent and non-partisan views in the Parliament. In April 2013, the public and groups were invited to submit NMP applications, and submissions closed on 20 May 2014. The Parliament received a total of 36 NMP applications.
If selected, Ku will possibly be the first NMP from the property industry. In 2011, the media reported Roy Chung, Head of Asia Investment Banking and Managing Director at RL Capital Management, expressed interest in running as an NMP for real estate but he did not make the list.
