Serangoon North HUDC estate privatised

8 May 2014

The Serangoon North HUDC Estate will be converted into a strata-titled property under the Land Titles (Strata) Act as of today.

In a statement, HDB said homeowners there now own their respective units, as well as the common property such as car parks and open landscaped areas, and the Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council will no longer be managing the estate’s common properties.

Serangoon North HUDC Estate comprises 244 units of flats at Serangoon North Avenue 1.

Introduced in the 1970s, HUDC flats were built for middle-income families who could afford larger flats. But in 1987, HDB stopped building them after private property prices declined and demand for HUDC units fell.

In 1995, the privatisation process was gradually introduced to let owners have better control over their estate. HUDC estates must obtain 75 percent support from the residents before privatisation can proceed.

Earlier this year, Braddell View is the last of 18 HUDC estates to be designated for privatisation.
