Aquatic centre at Singapore Sports Hub completed

20 May 2014

Despite teething problems, the $1.3 billion Singapore Sports Hub is on track for an opening next month, according to Singapore officials quoted in the media.

The 35-hectare complex includes a 55,000-seat national stadium which features an innovative cooling system and a retractable domed roof.

To be opened in stages, the venue will host a series of test events over the next few weeks to help address operational issues, said Lawrence Wong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth.

“We do not think it’s wise to have a big bang, you really need a series of test events to work out all the teething issues,” he said at yesterday’s opening of the 6,000-seater aquatic centre.

The aquatic centre is the first facility to be completed at the sport hub. It was initially scheduled to open in mid-April.

The Singapore Sports Hub, which includes a retail mall and community facilities, will open to the public on 27 and 28 June.
