The pedestrian underpass in Novena now spots a fresh splash of sparkle in the form of colourful murals on youth and sports.
The installation of one of the longest underground murals in Singapore is to raise funds for Very Special Arts Singapore (VSA) as part of UOL Group’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
Entitled “A Kaleidoscope of Colours”, the 200-foot long mural connecting United Square and Velocity@Novena Square is made up of 18 art pieces created by artists from the VSA, and UOL has reproduced the art pieces into about 2,000 pieces of tiles.
UOL’s staff volunteers along with artists, student volunteers from schools in the Thomson vicinity jointly installed the art pieces to complete the murals on 28 June. Minister of State, Prime Minister’s Office and Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth Sam Tan, VSA’s Executive Director Christopher Yeow, and UOL’s President (Property) Liam Wee Sin, were present at the underpass to officiate the installation work.
There were also a series of charity auctions and art exhibitions on 28 and 29 June to raise funds for VSA, and UOL also pledged $20,000 to support VSA’s activities, to provide people with disabilities opportunities to access art for rehabilitation and social integration.
“The art pieces will certainly beautify the underpass linking United Square and Velocity@Novena Square, making it more pleasant for the pedestrians. Being able to support the communities in which we live and work is integral to our commitment of making a difference in people’s lives,” Liam said.
“As we celebrate UOL’s 50th anniversary this year, we hope to kick start the SG50 celebration by showcasing the social fabric that will continue to undergird the vitality of Singapore,” he added.
