Singapore-listed BBR Holdings will build a new residence hall at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
Its wholly-owned subsidiary, Singapore Piling & Civil Engineering, has secured a $196 million contract for this project which will built at NTU North Hill precinct.
There will be six blocks of 13-storey student hostel comprising 1,582 rooms, as well as recreational facilities.
According to a statement, the project is the first public high-rise development in Singapore to deploy a Pre-fabricated Pre-finished Volumetric Modular Construction (PPVC) technology.
This is a light-weight steel modular system where room-sized units fittings are pre-fabricated in factories, and are then transported to construction sites for installation to form modular apartments.
BBR’s CEO Andrew Tan said, “The Singapore construction and building industry is at a crossroad whereby it is challenged by the tight labour market and increased foreign worker levies while facing strong growth momentum. Deploying the PPVC system will catapult us ahead to the next lap in terms of the breakthrough in labour productivity and operational efficiency.”
Notably, the government has been increasing efforts to improve the productivity of Singapore’s construction sector by implementing mesures such as setting a minimum percentage of prefab level for industrial GLS sites.
The NTU residence hall project is scheduled to be completed within 19 months and will have unique green and sustainability features.
