The open space along Sultan Gate in the Arab Street area has been refurbished with benches and garden swings, as part of the ‘Picnic in the Park – Under the Gelam Trees’.
The park is about 1,200 sq m, according to media reports and the project on State land started on 14 July and will run until 25 August. Sultan Gate leads to the Malay Heritage Centre, with shop houses and businesses in the vicinity.
This is one of the upcoming public space projects planned under the PubliCity initiative by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA).
“Public spaces can create memorable experiences for people. ‘Picnic in the Park’ is a simple pop-up project that we hope can bring the community together to enjoy public spaces in a meaningful way during this festive season. Under the PubliCity programme, we hope to continue to partner the community to create and improve the many public spaces in our city,” said Ng Lang, CEO of URA.
PubliCity strives to create both new public spaces as well as rejuvenate existing ones through good design and programmes.
