More training programmes should be offered to developers, builders and architects to help them get used to new construction methods, said the Singapore Contractors Association as reported in the media.
The statement came after the government made the use of new construction methods compulsory earlier this year to boost productivity.
Among the construction methods that private developers have to be familiar with is prefabrication. This involves constructing certain parts of a property off-site and then bringing them on-site to be assembled.
Certain Government Land Sale (GLS) sites will only be awarded to developers who utilise productive construction methods such as prefabrication. This is to encourage more private developers to adopt new construction methods that were already implemented in public projects.
Dr Ho Nyok Yong, president of the Singapore Contractors Association, said, “Obviously, the Government will just take, maybe, some private project to look into it. Then they (the developers) will learn from the process.”
Educational courses can be set-up to help train developers, he suggested
By switching to productive building techniques, developers will be able to finish their projects in a shorter time. Prefabrication, for instance, eliminates some risks of bad weather slowing down the construction process.
