S’pore to help with master plans for Tanzanian cities

The Singapore Cooperation Enterprise (SCE) and building consultant Surbana signed a contract on 24 December 2014 to help the Tanzanian government draw up the master plans for Arusha City and Mwanza City.

Covering about 80 percent of the size of Singapore, the master plan area for Arusha City covers 278 sq km from Arusha City and an additional area not exceeding 300 sq km from Arusha and Meru District Councils.

The new plan will decongest the current settlement pressure and embrace emerging trends, including the city structural landuse, infrastructure and utility services. It has been almost 30 years since the last master plan for Arusha was prepared, and the new plan will also help to develop the tourism industry there.

Meanwhile, the master plan for Mwanza City will cover a total gross land area of 761.55 sq km, and will provide a basis for future growth in a sustainable manner for the next 20 years. The master plan for the development of Mwanza Municipal and the surrounding areas has not been reviewed since it was prepared in 1992.

This is Surbana’s eighth project in Africa.

SCE is an integrated arm of International Enterprise (IE) Singapore, the government agency driving Singapore’s external economy.
