Plans to transform Yuhua in Jurong into Singapore’s first fully green neighbourhood is well underway, with some initiatives rolled out so far from the $18 million project, reported the media.
For example, the walls of Block 223 along Jurong East Street 21 are now covered with plant creepers, which are expected to reduce the surface temperature of the building by up to 5°C and enhance the greenery of the estate.
Meanwhile, 38 blocks within the estate will be equipped with water and energy-saving solutions under HDB’s Greenprint scheme, which was unveiled in 2012.
The estate saw LED street lighting, which is estimated to reduce energy consumption by at least fifty percent, installed at all three open-air carparks and their driveways.
Energy-regeneration systems for the lifts in 18 blocks and solar panels on the roofs of 29 blocks will also be installed soon. Works on building a pneumatic waste conveyance system, an automated method to collect household refuse via vacuum-type underground pipes, have also started.
Set to be completed this year, the green initiatives are expected to yield an annual savings of up to $144,000, said the HDB.
