To minimise railway noise near residential areas, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will install 3.5 km of noise barriers at nine locations.
The noise barriers are expected to reduce railway noise levels by 5 to 10 decibels, so residents living near elevated MRT tracks can enjoy an improved living environment, LTA said in a statement today.
Following successful pilot projects at Bishan and Jurong East, LTA awarded the first contract in December 2013 to install 10 km of noise barriers at 16 locations including Choa Chu Kang, Woodlands, Ang Mo Kio, Simei, Bedok, Queenway, Dover and Jurong West.
These installation works are currently in progress at Admiralty, Marsiling and Sembawang.
The barriers will be installed in Ang Mo Kio, Pioneer and Yew Tee next, and all works are on schedule to be completed in 2016.
The second contract for 3.5 km of noise barriers in Clementi, Eunos and Lakeside will be implemented after designs and site investigations are completed in Q3 2015. Costing about $17 million, the works are targeted to be completed in mid-2017.
Another 9 km of barriers will be installed in 2016, and more details will be announced later this year.
Some 20 km of noise barriers will be built in total, and the railway noise barrier programme is targeted to be completed by 2019.
