New test bed launched to push Singapore’s Smart Nation vision

Commercial enterprises and public agencies can soon create and test-bed smart city innovations, in the areas of education, healthcare, transport and public safety, in a living new lab.

Tech solutions provider NCS launched SURF@NCS on 9 February (pictured), as part of its Solutions for Urbanised Future (SURF) initiative. SURF is focussed on driving smart city innovations, in line with Singapore’s vision as the world’s first Smart Nation.

NCS CEO Chia Wee Boon said, “Through SURF@NCS, we aim to partner best-of-breed technology providers to build a vibrant eco-system where we can co-create solutions to enhance essential government services and deliver game-changing enterprise innovations.”

Singapore announced plans for a new Integrated Infocomm Media Masterplan in June 2013, and in November 2014, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong unveiled several collaborative government initiatives to turn Singapore into a Smart Nation.

For example, HDB is piloting the Smart Elderly Monitoring and Alert System (SEMAS), which will see sensors in HDB flats to monitor the movements of the elderly, and alert caregivers if irregularities are detected.

The government will also set up a Smart Nation Programme Office to take in perspectives and ideas from citizens and industry players.
