Man arrested for flat rental scams

A 49-year-old man has been arrested by the police yesterday for his alleged involvement in over 20 cases of rental scams, announced the Singapore Police Force in a statement.

On 14 February, two similar cases of flat rental scams were reported to the police. The victims in these cases had responded to an online advertisement for the rental of a unit in Ghim Moh Road and Boon Lay Drive.

The suspect would then arrange with the victims to view the unit, and thereafter collect $2,400 to $2,840 from them as advance payment and deposit for the flat rental. Upon collecting the fees, the suspect can no longer be contacted.

The suspect was arrested at Jalan Besar on 17 February. Items seized from him include receipt books as well as tenancy agreement files.

Preliminary investigations indicate the suspect may be linked to over 20 counts of rental scams using flats at Ghim Moh Road, Boon Lay Drive and Mei Ling Street.

If convicted of cheating, the suspect may be imprisoned for up to 10 years.
