No paint, no tiles, nothing permanent – decorating a rental may be challenging when there are so many limitations to adhere to. However, that doesn’t mean that you have to live in a styleless space. Here are some big impact, low-commitment decorating ideas which prove that living in style isn’t just for homeowners!
1. Add storage
Custom cabinetry is not an option when you do not own the place, and rentals usually lack storage. To maximise space, use wall shelves, affordable DIY bookcases and vertical storage solutions like hanging boxes. Also, baskets are wonderful mobile storage options. Use them for magazines or books, or as a general storage box to hide clutter.
2. Accessorize
Don’t be afraid to show your personality with all sorts of quirky and fun accessories – cushion covers, posters, lighting, even books! Add a personal touch to your home by choosing accents that really reflect your style. The best part is these items can be brought along with you when you move out!
3. Add plants
Plants bring life to any apartment, and don’t require too much effort to maintain! Potted plants or terrariums are wonderful additions to make your apartment feel like home. Even if you absolutely do not want the responsibility of a live plant, fake plants work too!
4. Use alternative wallpaper
White walls are fine in offices and museums, but at home, many people prefer color, pattern and texture. Here are some alternative options!
– Removable (or peel-and-stick) wallpaper gives a non-permanent personal touch to any living space, and easily wax on and off like a sticker.
– Wall decals are a fun, affordable way to personalize your own space. These removable stickers come in all shapes, sizes and patterns, you’re bound to find one that suits your personality!
– Gallery displays are a great way to make a statement and reflect your style on a plain wall. Use command hooks to hang photo frames for easy installation and removal. What better way to feel more at home than customizing your space with the people, places and things you love?
5. Add colours
When it comes to making an apartment feel like home, adding pops of color throughout the apartment is a perfect way to showcase your personality. From furniture to throw pillows to area rugs, don’t be afraid to go crazy with colour! What’s more, it’s easy to change things up once you’re tired of the current colours!
After you’ve fully enjoyed the rental space and you’re ready to move out, make sure you return the
space to its original state. Here’s a tip: Take pictures of the rental home when you first move in so
that you won’t forget how it has to look like when you move out!
