Following the Parliament’s dissolution yesterday (25 August), President Tony Tan Keng Yam shortly issued the Writ of Election, revealing that the anticipated Polling Date will fall on 11 September.
“Under the law, Polling Day at any general election shall be a public holiday. Every employer shall on Polling Day allow every elector in his employ a reasonable period of time for voting,” said a press release from the Election Department.
The agency also disclosed that the Nomination Day will be held next Tuesday (1 Septmeber), and there will be nine nomination places. In addition, 10 September will serve as a Cooling-Off Day, a 24-hour period when all political parties are legally forbidden from campaigning.
Mr. Ng Wai Choong, the Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Market Authority, is the Returning Officer or the one responsible for overseeing the elections.
In total, there are 2,460,977 eligible voters, who will elect 89 Members of Parliament (MPs) in 29 constituencies. The latter consists of 16 Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs) and 13 Single Member Constituencies (SMCs).
Back in the 2011 elections, there were 2,350,257 voters, who chose 87 MPs to represent 27 constituencies comprising 15 GRCs and 12 SMCs.
