Dubai developer Emaar Properties has marked the ground-breaking of The Tower at Dubai Creek, which will be the world’s tallest tower when completed in 2020.
The event on Monday (10 October) was graced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, and other dignitaries.
The 928-metre tall skyscraper will cost US$1 billion to build, and will eclipse the Burj Khalifa in Dubai by 100 metres, providing a 360-degree view of the city.
The tower anchors the six sq km Dubai Creek Harbour mega-development, which is located near the international airport. The waterfront development is a joint venture between Emaar Properties and Dubai Holding, and was designed by Spanish-Swiss architect Santiago Calatrava Valls.
Mohamed Alabbar, Chairman of Emaar Properties, said: “From Burj Al Arab, Emirates Towers, Burj Khalifa and now The Tower, Dubai has been the centre of innovation for supertall structures and breakthrough developments in design, architecture and engineering. We are pushing our boundaries in every aspect of this new master-planned development, one of the largest in the world.”
The iconic landmark supports the goals of Dubai Plan 2021, which aims to make the city a global business and leisure hub, and will also help drive tourism.
When Dubai Creek Harbour is completed, it will feature several high-end residential projects, a boutique hotel, a new marina and a 4.5km-long boardwalk.
