Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Sunday, 20 March, officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for three projects to revitalise the waterways in Hougang under the Public Utilities Board’s Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) programme, reported TODAYonline.
The three ABC Waters projects are also part of the Housing Board’s Remaking Our Heartland Programme for the estate.
Spanning a total of 2.2km, it will begin at the intersection of Hougang Avenue 4 up to Hougang Avenue 10, and then continue from Sungei Pinang, next to Punggol Park, up to the Serangoon Reservoir.
A 1.3 km section of the canal along Hougang Avenue 10, and from Hougang Avenue 4 to Buangkok Drive, will have more greenery.
Meanwhile, the pedestrian bridge at Block 458 in Hougang Avenue 10 will be redeveloped into a deck that will link the housing blocks with the bus stop.
At Sungei Pinang, a pedestrian bridge will be built to connect the housing estates with nearby amenities, with more greenery being planted along the riverbank.
As for Serangoon Reservoir, a 200-metre stretch will be enhanced with new community and recreational spaces, such as viewing decks and a new fishing spot.
Works on all three projects are scheduled to be completed by 2018. A total of 20 ABC Waters projects across Singapore are expected to be completed in the next five years.
