According to a report prepared by Malaysia’s Performance Management Delivery Unit (Pemandu), the Greater Kuala Lumpur / Klang Valley (GKL / KV) National Key Economic Area (NKEA) aims to be among the top economic and liveable cities in the world by 2020, reported Bernama.

The city is expected to house 10 million people by 2020, up from six million in 2010. This creates the need for sustainable development that can tackle the challenges of rapid urbanisation.

Understanding the need to enhance the rail networking system in Klang Valley, the government has invested RM32 billion to develop the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line 1. This will benefit almost 1.2 million people, said the report.

The MRT Line 2, scheduled for completion in 2022, is expected to serve almost two million people, improving the connectivity in the GKL / KV area.

The report added that the National Key Result Areas for Urban Public Transport has also increased public transport networks through various initiatives, namely the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) Komuter, Kelana Jaya LRT Line, and the LRT Extension Project (LEP).

Besides that, there are also initiatives to increase bus services, such as the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and GO-KL lines.
