Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority (BCA) is set to honour a number of local developments, including malls, residential projects and community spaces for incorporating a wide range of user-friendly features that cater to everyone’s needs.

On Thursday (12 May), it announced the 25 recipients of the Universal Design (UD) Mark Award. Of this, seven are still under construction, while 18 have been completed.

“UD is about addressing the needs of as many people as possible, including persons with disabilities and the elderly,” said Teo Orh Hai, the agency’s Acting Group Director for Building Plan and Management.

The highest accolade, the Platinum Award, will go to three completed developments. These are the HDB’s SkyVille@Dawson, office building CapitaGreen, and the Enabling Village, a community space dedicated to persons with disabilities.

In particular, SkyVille@Dawson consists of three interconnected blocks containing 960 apartments, which are organised into ‘Sky Villages’ of 80 units each that share common sky terraces and communal facilities. These include a supermarket, coffee shop and retail spaces, community living rooms and pavilions, play areas and fitness facilities.

According to the BCA, this development was recognised for holistically adopting the principle of universal design to create an inclusive environment for residents of all ages and abilities to live comfortably and independently.

Besides its unique design that promotes togetherness, it also features a wide variety of community spaces and multi-generational facilities that are seamlessly linked to each other, as well as neighbouring developments like the Alexandra Canal linear park.

Separately, CapitaGreen is a 40-storey premium Grade A office tower located in the central business district that was lauded for its range of amenities that provide greater convenience to its occupants, like a ‘Wind Funnel’ that draws in fresh air from a higher altitude to cool the office spaces.

Meanwhile, the Enabling Village was praised for its features which cater to the needs of those with disabilities, such as wheelchair accessible paths, Braille maps and hearing enhancement systems.

The awards will be presented during the annual BCA Awards ceremony at Resorts World Sentosa on 26 May.
