5 distinctly Singaporean homes

Contributor 10 Jun 2016

With all the reminiscing we’ve done this issue, it’s time to take a walk down memory lane. These five quintessentially Singaporean homes capture the essence of local living, with iconic elements from the 1950s to the 1990s.

1. A Peranakan-meets-colonial design is pulled off with flair in this apartment. Gorgeous Peranakan-pattern tiles feature in the dining area, while the old-school telephone and metal-framed wooden furniture in the living area add to the home’s nostalgic ambience. Interior designer: Linear Space Concepts

Together with the brick wall and the vintage display cases in the living room, the design theme reminds us of a time of simple and joyful living in our garden city.

3. This open-concept apartment incorporates a colonial flavour, reminiscent of the popular black and white houses of Singapore’s past. This is obvious in the black grille fixtures, alongside a collection of hats in the hallway. Vintage finds such as a leather armchair and colourful suitcases are a visually intriguing throwback to the 1960s.

The patterned ventilation block, a common sight in older Singaporean buildings, is an interesting feature, while the kopitiam chairs are lovely nostalgic touches. Another standout is the display piece made from an old sewing machine, which is a perfect mix of vintage and new.

5.   The Chinese influence is obvious in this condo, with its intricately carved, dark wooden furniture and expertly painted porcelain stools. Other touches, like a heavy plant pot with Chinese dragon detail, a floral woven basket, and a beautiful polyptych on the wall in the dining area, add to the distinctly Chinese feel of the home.
